Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly paper is to examine the strategic and institutional evolution of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Limited from a traditional stock exchange into a technology-enabled and diversified capital market infrastructure institution. The study evaluates BSE's transformation through its financial performance, technological strategy, market platforms, competitive positioning, human resource management, marketing practices, and emerging strategic challenges. It further aims to identify the factors that support BSE's continued relevance and provide practical suggestions for strengthening its competitive position and institutional leadership in India's evolving capital market.

Methodology: This paper adopts an exploratory qualitative case study approach to examine the strategic and institutional evolution of BSE Limited. Relevant information was collected through keyword-based searches using Google, Google Scholar, publicly available company reports, regulatory publications, and other secondary sources, with AI-assisted tools used to support information organization and interpretation. The collected information was analysed and interpreted in accordance with the objectives of the study using analytical frameworks including SWOC, ABCD, PESTLE, financial analysis, competitor comparison, technological strategy analysis, marketing analysis, and human resource management analysis.

Analysis & Suggestions: The analysis demonstrates that BSE Limited has evolved beyond its traditional role as a stock exchange through technology-enabled trading infrastructure, StAR MF, India INX, SME-market development, index services, and diversified capital-market platforms. Although the institution has achieved substantial financial growth and strengthened its technological and institutional capabilities, it continues to face challenges such as NSE's dominance in equity derivatives, the need to expand India INX's international contribution, increasing fintech disruption, and cybersecurity and technology-reliability requirements. The study therefore suggests strengthening derivatives-market participation, expanding StAR MF into a broader investment ecosystem, increasing the international reach of India INX, improving retail investor engagement, and maintaining continuous investment in technology, cybersecurity, and institutional capabilities.

Originality/Value: This paper provides a multidimensional examination of BSE Limited by viewing its development as an institutional transformation rather than only as a conventional company or stock-exchange performance study. It connects BSE's historical heritage with its technological transformation, platform diversification, financial development, competitive challenges, and evolving role within India's capital-market infrastructure. The study provides useful insights for researchers, financial-market practitioners, regulators, and institutions interested in understanding how established financial-market organizations can adapt to technological disruption while maintaining institutional credibility and long-term relevance.
