Abstract

Purpose: This study analyzes the transformation of India's tourism industry through sustainability adoption by examining key factors influencing environmental conservation, socio-economic development, community engagement, and responsible travel practices. It identifies the opportunities and challenges affecting the industry's long-term viability and inclusive growth.

Methodology: The study is based on an extensive literature review and secondary data analysis. Strategic frameworks such as SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), ABCD (Advantages, Benefits, Constraints, Disadvantages), and PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) are used to evaluate internal and external factors influencing India's tourism industry from the perspectives of government bodies, private sector businesses, local communities, and tourists.

Results & Analysis: The findings reveal that government initiatives, eco-friendly infrastructure development, community empowerment, and digital platform adoption are the major drivers of sustainable tourism transformation. The analysis identifies rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and growing domestic tourism as key strengths, while inadequate rural infrastructure, seasonal fluctuations, environmental degradation, and safety concerns remain major challenges. PESTLE analysis further highlights the influence of political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors on the industry's sustainable development trajectory.

Originality: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of India's tourism industry transformation by integrating sustainability assessment with SWOT, ABCD, and PESTLE frameworks, offering a multidimensional understanding of industry trends, stakeholder dynamics, and strategic challenges in achieving green tourism development.

Value: The study offers practical recommendations for government agencies, tourism operators, local communities, and policymakers to promote eco-friendly practices, community-based tourism, efficient resource management, and informed decision-making, contributing to long-term sustainability and inclusive growth in India's tourism industry.
